January 28, 2016 | Ellen Pincus

MADISON, Wis. - This week as Governor Scott Walker visits Wisconsin’s Technical Colleges across the state emphasizing education for careers in the 21st century, the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) is concluding a month-long spotlight on the rapidly growing field of information technology (IT) and the critical need for skilled IT talent.

Madison Area Technical College hosted an IT event yesterday featuring demonstrations of mobile and web software development, network security and systems administration programs. Fox Valley Technical College also hosted Technology Day yesterday, showcasing a digital cadaver table, prosthetic 3D printing simulation technology and more.

IT is a major part of all industries, including healthcare, finance, marketing and manufacturing. “The increasing prevalence of technology in our lives and jobs have created a critical demand for qualified IT professionals” said Dr. Morna Foy, president of the Wisconsin Technical College System. “Wisconsin employers are relying on the Tech Colleges for developing IT talent.”

In response to technological advancements and opportunities, the Wisconsin Technical Colleges provide training for both new students and current IT professionals. Over 7,000 students are enrolled in over 70 IT programs from Mobile Applications, to Network Security Specialist, to Computer Simulation and Gaming. Many more are enrolled in certificate programs offering advanced specialized training such as Microsoft Technologies, Java Professional Web Development and iOS Web Application Development.

Salaries for Wisconsin technical college IT graduates are high, as are job placement rates. Web Development and Systems Security Specialist programs boast a 100% graduate placement rate. Self-reported starting median earnings for WTCS graduates are $50,998 for Information Systems Security Specialists, $49,450 for Computer Systems Administration Specialists and $43,500 for Web & Software Developers.
