Dr. Tony Evers was first elected to the constitutional office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction in April 2009 and was re-elected in April 2013 with over 61 percent of the popular vote. For more than 35 years, Tony has dedicated his life to public education in Wisconsin, serving as an educator at every level – teacher, principal, district superintendent, regional administrator, and deputy state superintendent – before his election to the state’s highest educational post.
As State Superintendent, Tony has focused his administration on Agenda 2017: Every Child a Graduate College and Career Ready. Under his leadership, Wisconsin has increased its graduation rates to nation-leading levels, adopted new academic standards, reformed and modernized student testing, and reformed accountability systems for schools and educators. During his second term, Tony is leading the charge around investing in innovation and personalized learning, expanding access to career and technical education and dual credit opportunities, and reforming Wisconsin’s system of school finance.
Born and raised in Plymouth, Wisconsin, Tony graduated from Plymouth High School and earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tony has been married for forty-two years to his high school sweetheart, Kathy. They are the parents of three adult children, all Wisconsin public school graduates, and have five grandchildren.
