Hired Before Graduation: Class Assignment Leads to Job

Many schools claim to provide real-life experiences, but it is unusual when a class project leads to a job.

Moraine Park’s Associate of Science in Accounting degree provides a career preparation project within Accounting 3.  Students create a professional résumé and cover letter and practice interviewing skills based on an actual job posting.

Initially, student Allysa Larsen picked a general accounting position. Eventually, she decided to a select a position that better matched her goals.

She received feedback from her accounting instructor and careers instructor Lisa Ferguson. Allysa had extensive non-accounting experience and degrees unrelated to accounting. She received extensive feedback to help her highlight relevant accounting-related skills.

“I didn’t want all the hard work to go to waste, so I submitted it to the company.”  Within 2 hours she was contacted and scheduled an interview. Lisa prepared Allysa for the interview and helped her select an appropriate wardrobe.

Allysa landed her first accounting job!

“Along with helping get a job, the class work prepared me to have the knowledge of what may be expected in the work place…Moraine Park is such a helpful and great campus…The classes are smaller…teachers are easily reachable.”

You are “never too young to go back to continue your education. I….wish I’d started this path sooner, but glad I am where I am now.”
